Barnstable

Text Box: We rented this house because it had a backyard that ended with a beach. It was a little beach on Cape Cod Bay in Barnstable. Adam was almost 5 and the little beach on the gentle waters of the bay sounded inviting. Of course the whale watch boats which begin in Barnstable as well as all the fishing boats barrel back and forth in the calm waters so it was a little daunting at first. Another feature was the spiral staircase up to the second floor bedroom which would be Amy’s. Amy had recently turned 15 so she liked her privacy.

I thought I had made a terrible mistake when we first drove up to the place. On the street side I felt like we were in a Long Island bedroom community, all the houses had that look. There’s nothing wrong with that but it’s not my ideal for a Cape vacation. The back side was quite different and was really charming. An outdoor shower stall on the side of the house made it perfect.

The beach end of the yard is the subject of Chapter 39.

We ended our stay here in the Upper Cape deciding that we had a great time but we prefer the Lower Cape area around Wellfleet. I still don’t get why the part that’s North is the Lower Cape and the part that’s South is the Upper Cape.
