Text Box: The Hazeltree

After Amy and David asked me to do their wedding invitations I tried to come up with the perfect symbol to mark the event. Their baby, Hazel, is such a central figure in all of our lives that I had to find a way to include her.

I decided to look for some hazelnut tie-in and I discovered that there is a Turkish Filbert tree at the “Conservatory Water” at East 75th Street in Central Park. The Conservatory Water is the pond where people sail model boats on summer weekends. A filbert is a hazelnut.

Gerry and I searched for the tree on a Saturday in October and almost gave up. It turns out that the location is more like two blocks north of the pond. I saw it sitting at the end of a clearing and knew that I had my drawing.
